Stella’s Story
Stella is a bold, bright, and determined 5-year-old who has never let Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) define her. Her parents, Sam and Jeremy, have fiercely advocated for her and other families—helping ensure SMA was added to Arizona’s newborn screening program.
Despite her physical challenges, Stella is a joyful kindergartener who loves to learn and brings light to everyone around her. But this winter has been incredibly tough.
A Tough Season for Stella
It started with a cold just before Thanksgiving that landed her in the ICU. She fought her way back home and even returned to school. But then, just weeks later, her immune system was hit hard by a triple threat—COVID-19, the flu, and another cold—right before Christmas.
On Christmas Eve, as her body struggled, Stella had to be intubated. Since then, she has remained in the hospital, slowly but steadily working her way toward recovery. It’s been nearly six weeks. Her parents have not left her side.
How You Can Help
We’re raising $3,300 to cover the Lackey family’s health insurance for the next three months. This will give Sam and Jeremy one less thing to worry about as they focus entirely on Stella’s recovery.
